Is it possible to break a jubilee clip?

yes it sounds very much like it but if as you say it was a rubber pie to the air cleaner then this is not under pressure and there should not be a need for a clip. you will soon find out if it is needed cos it will come off and the car will run badly or not at all but it should be alright.
